It’s a messaging app and a comprehensive platform that offers social networking, mobile payments, and even food delivery. Many popular attractions have public accounts on WeChat, where I can find travel information and make bookings and appointments, especially with public organisations like museums or city councils.

Formerly known as Ctrip, Trip.com is the go-to app for booking flights, hotels, trains, and tours in China. With its extensive network of travel partners and competitive prices, Trip.com makes planning and booking your entire trip in one place easy.
The options on Trip.com are all available for foreigners to stay, and you can pay using Visa/Mastercard credit or Alipay.

Apple Maps
In China, Apple Maps is the go-to navigation app because Google Maps is blocked. While Google Maps can be accessed with a VPN, it’s not commonly used, and the information is outdated. Apple Maps leverages data from Amaps, ensuring up-to-date information. The app is in English with Chinese place names, making it useful for bilingual users.
Baidu Map & Amap
When it comes to maps in China, Baidu Map is king. With detailed maps, real-time traffic updates, and accurate navigation, Baidu Map helps you get from point A to point B with ease. Whether you’re exploring cities or venturing into the countryside, Baidu Map has you covered.
In China, Gaode/Amap is another top-notch mapping app. Created by Alibaba, Amap provides comparable features to Baidu Map, such as detailed maps, real-time traffic updates, and public transportation details. Amap’s user-friendly interface and precise directions make it a trustworthy tool for travellers.
Transportation
Railway 12306
The official app for booking train tickets in China is Railway 12306. It offers a convenient way to plan and manage your train travel itinerary. Whether you’re traveling for leisure or business, this app ensures passengers a smooth and hassle-free experience.
You must provide an email address to confirm your identity. When buying tickets, complete the passenger information. This process works for purchasing both train and high-speed rail tickets.

If you don’t have a Chinese phone number, you can use the Gaode/Amap mini-program within the Alipay App as an alternative. It’s really convenient for ordering rides while traveling in China.
Subway QR Mini Apps in Alipay
Alipay offers convenient public transport mini-programs. Generate a QR code for the subway system of your destination city. Before your journey, consider signing up or providing your passport details if required. Prepare in advance to avoid delays. Upon arrival, scan the QR code at the turnstiles for seamless access.
Food Delivery
Ele.me by Alibaba
Ele.me, found within Alipay, is a well-liked food delivery application in China. It offers diverse food options and efficient delivery services, guaranteeing a convenient and pleasant dining experience, whether you desire local specialities, global cuisine, or late-night snacks.
While in China, I found that Meituan is a popular food delivery app. However, I faced difficulty completing the verification process. After several unsuccessful attempts, I switched to Ele.me, which was much easier to use within the Alipay app.

Hungry? Dianping has got you covered. Often referred to as the “Yelp of China,” Dianping is the country’s largest online platform for restaurant reviews and ratings. Whether you’re craving local delicacies or international cuisine, Dianping helps you find the best dining options wherever you are. I even used this app to queue for restaurant seats before physically reaching there!

The only downside is that you won’t be able to access social media apps such as Instagram, Facebook, and Google. VPN
It’s a good idea to consider using a VPN if you want to access apps such as WhatsApp, Google, Facebook, Instagram, and others. I had some trouble accessing my Samsung account while traveling, and the VPN I purchased didn’t always work well. So, based on my experience, I can’t personally recommend a reliable VPN. However, you might find valuable insights from other travelers and expats on social media regarding their VPN choices and experiences.
