Weekend Getaway at Kuala Kubu Baru and Fraser’s Hill
Introduction
I embarked on this exciting two-day, one-night weekend getaway from Kuala Lumpur with my girlfriends. Our group, eager for a quick escape from city life, explored the scenic beauty of Kuala Kubu Bharu (KKB) and Fraser’s Hill. We chose KKB and Fraser’s Hill for their blend of nature, history, and tranquillity. KKB’s charming town, scenic surroundings, and Fraser’s Hill’s calm, misty atmosphere made for a perfect getaway.
Our itinerary was packed with activities. First, we explored KKB town. Then, we indulged in local cuisine, enjoyed scenic lookouts, and had a BBQ dinner. We then had a picnic at Sungai Pertak. Finally, we ended our trip exploring Fraser’s Hill’s nature trails and attractions.

Hearty Lunch at 98 Seafood Restaurant KKB
Upon arriving at 98 Restaurant, we were welcomed by a lively and bustling atmosphere. Nestled in the heart of KKB, the restaurant had its tables filled and offered a delightful respite from our journey.
Next, we ordered various dishes: coconut tom yum prawns, mixed vegetable stir-fry with pine nuts, steamed minced pork with egg and tofu, slow-boiled chicken soup with white peppercorns, and signature smoked chicken. The food was delicious, with the smoked chicken standing out for its smoky aroma and juiciness. The steamed dish offers umami flavour and a blend of textures, while the tom yum is perfectly balanced, sour, and spicy.
This was my third visit to this restaurant, and it did not disappoint. The food was a solid 4.5 out of 5. Each dish was well-prepared and packed with authentic flavours. Our meal cost us RM198.80, around RM28 per person, which was very reasonable considering the quality and portions.
98 Seafood Restaurant in Kuala Kubu Baru is easily accessible by car and is located in the town centre. Parking is available nearby.
Background and History of KKB Town
After lunch, we decided to explore Kuala Kubu Bharu, often referred to as KKB, a historic town with a rich colonial past. Established in the early 20th century, it was a key administrative centre during British rule. KKB is a small town, and you will see the unique architecture of pre-war buildings. It’s nice to relax in one of the local cafes and enjoy a sip of coffee.
Sightseeing
Selangor Dam Lookout Point
The dam lookout point offers breathtaking views of the surrounding reservoir and lush greenery. It’s a great spot for photography and simply soaking in the natural beauty.
Bridge Lookout Point
This scenic viewpoint provides stunning vistas of the river and the forested hills beyond. It’s an ideal spot for a quiet moment of reflection amidst nature.
BBQ Dinner
We stayed at a charming homestay equipped with a BBQ pit in the evening, perfect for an evening cookout. We prepared various BBQ dishes, including marinated chicken wings, beef skewers, sausages, and grilled vegetables. We also had a selection of dips and sauces.
The BBQ was a fun and interactive experience. Everyone pitched into the grill and prepared the food, and the aroma of the sizzling meat and vegetables created a delightful atmosphere.
It turns out that the marinated chicken wings were juicy and flavorful, the beef skewers were tender, and the grilled vegetables added a nice touch of freshness, making the meal a resounding success.
Sungai Pertak Picnic
The next day, we planned a relaxing picnic by the river, carrying packed breakfast and mats. We left our homestay around 7:00 AM to make the most of our day at Sungai Pertak.
Sungai Pertak is a short drive from KKB. We took a scenic route through lush greenery, arriving at the picnic spot within 15 minutes. We spent the day lounging by the river, enjoying our picnic foods (some BBQ leftovers, too), having deep conversations, and taking refreshing dips in the clear water.
To me, Sungai Pertak was a hidden gem. Its serene environment and crystal-clear waters make it an ideal spot for a relaxing day out.
What You Can Do and Prepare for the Place
- Bring Food and Drinks: There are no eateries nearby.
- Pack Essentials: Mats, umbrellas, and insect repellent.
- Prepare for Activities: Swimming gear and games.
How Much It Cost
The picnic was relatively inexpensive, with costs primarily for food and transport. Entry to the area is RM1 to the orang asli at the road entrance.
How to Get There
Sungai Pertak is accessible by car from KKB. Follow the signs towards the picnic area and park in the designated spots.
Fraser’s Hill
Lastly, we visited Fraser’s Hill, a hill station located approximately 100 kilometres north of Kuala Lumpur, known for its cool climate and colonial charm. Fraser’s Hill is famous for its misty atmosphere, colonial architecture, nature trails, and bird-watching opportunities. The drive up to Fraser’s Hill is winding and scenic, with lush forests and occasional viewpoints. Drive cautiously and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.
We had lunch at Scott’s Pub & Restaurant, a quaint colonial-style restaurant that exudes an old-world charm with its Tudor-style architecture, well-maintained gardens, and cosy interior. I ordered grilled dory, which tasted good and came with vegetables.
Things to Do in Fraser’s Hill
- Nature Trails: Explore the various walking trails that offer breathtaking views and opportunities to spot local wildlife.
- Bird Watching: Fraser’s Hill is a renowned bird-watching destination with numerous species to observe.
- Golfing: Enjoy a round of golf at the charming 9-hole golf course.
- Exploring the Town: Visit the old post office, clock tower, and other colonial-era buildings.
How to Get to Fraser’s Hill
By Car
Drive from Kuala Lumpur via the Karak Highway and Route 55. The journey takes approximately 2 hours.
By Bus
Take a bus from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Kubu Bharu, then a taxi or shuttle service up to Fraser’s Hill.

To conclude, with its blend of history, nature, and charm, a trip to KKB and Fraser’s Hill offers a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
